Laser Therapy

Photobiomodulation (PBM Therapy), or Laser Therapy is a safe, non-invasive treatment using near infra-red wavelengths to penetrate through the skin to the underlying tissues to relieve pain, reduce inflammation and accelerate healing times, by actively encouraging cell regeneration.

PBM Therapy has been extensively studied and proven to be effective in aiding recovery from injury or surgery. It can also help to relieve discomfort associated with chronic conditions such as arthritis.

PBM Therapy is a relaxing treatment that many dogs enjoy and can often cause them to drift off to sleep. Positive effects are usually reported within 24 hours of the first treatment with multiple, regular sessions showing long lasting results, especially when used as part of a therapeutic package.

The treatment session will take around 30 mins in total with about 15 mins of active PBM therapy and the remainder of the time being used for other modalities such as massage and joint mobilisation.

What is Laser Therapy?

Lasers that can be purchased online are often not powerful enough to deliver the dose of photons needed to achieve a therapeutic benefit. They also may not be able to penetrate deep enough to reach the underlying tissues or may require extended treatment times which can be difficult for your dog to tolerate.

In my practice, I use a SpectraVET, Class 3B laser, imported from Australia, which is portable, simple to use and can deliver the correct dose in a short treatment session.

Lasers carry inherent risks, making it important to consult a trained and suitably qualified practitioner. Eye protection must be worn and owners must inform the therapist of any benign or malignant tumours. Masses must be avoided to prevent stimulating growth of the tumour. Laser therapy is not recommended for pregnant or lactating bitches.
