What are Rehab Exercises?

Canine rehabilitation exercises are physical therapies designed to help dogs recover from injury, surgery, or manage chronic conditions like arthritis or neurological disorders.

These exercises are targeted movements and activities that improve mobility, reduce pain, build strength and enhance quality of life.

Movement is medicine - not just for people but for your canine companions too. A targeted exercise plan can make a world of difference and Coastal Canines is here to support that journey.

Helping Your Dog Move Better, Feel Better, and Live Better

Why Strength and Conditioning Matter:

  • Improved muscle tone and joint stability

  • Enhanced balance and coordination

  • Reduced risk of injury or re-injury

  • Increased endurance and mobility

  • Faster post-operative recovery

Range of Motion (ROM) Exercises

These help maintain or restore joint flexibility.

  • Passive ROM: Gently moving a dog’s limb through its natural range while the dog is relaxed (often used post-surgery).

  • Active ROM: The dog moves its limbs on its own, like walking or stepping over obstacles.

Balance and Proprioception

Improves body awareness and coordination.

  • Balance discs or wobble boards: These are used to gently challenge a dog’s balance, helping strengthen their core muscles and stabilise joints. They’re ideal for older dogs needing joint support and muscle tone without impact.

  • Weight shifting: Encouraging dogs to shift weight from one limb to another.

Strengthening Exercises

Used to rebuild muscle mass and support joint health.

  • Sit-to-stand: Like doggy squats—great for hindlimb strength.

  • Cavaletti rails: These adjustable poles encourage controlled, mindful stepping. They’re fantastic for improving body awareness (proprioception), stride length, and coordination—especially helpful in dogs recovering from neurological issues or building strength post-surgery.

  • Incline walking: Builds muscle and endurance, especially for hips and rear legs.

Thriving in Their Golden Years

Just like in human physical therapy, targeted exercises can dramatically improve a dog’s quality of life. Movement keeps joints lubricated, muscles strong, and minds engaged. For senior dogs especially—who may be slowing down due to age-related changes or conditions like arthritis—gentle, regular exercise can make the difference between struggling and thriving.

These tailored sessions aren’t just about fitness; they’re about functional movement—helping your dog navigate stairs, get up from their bed with ease, and enjoy walks again.

Tailored Tools, Thoughtful Techniques

No two dogs are the same, which is why every rehabilitation and strength program is individually crafted. Whether your dog is a recovering athlete, a senior with stiff joints, or a puppy with developmental needs, our approach adapts to their life stage, condition, and comfort level.

Every session builds on the last, with thoughtful re-evaluation and progression. That way, your dog stays engaged, challenged, and most importantly—feeling their best.
